Fun story! I've always enjoyed coming across the few I've seen (but have never seen the referenced duck or its tracks!!)....
I did notice, however, you include the following sentence at the beginning of your story, but then proceed to use "manhole cover" elsewhere throughout: "Since personhole cover is a disgusting term and manhole a problematic term, hatch cover or utility cover are the preferred names."
I love your wandering and discovery of odd objects. Here is one of my finds a few years ago when I was following the Duwamish along the west bank.
Maybe you will find something new about it. However, it is intriguing.

Good point. Clearly, I need to be a better editor of my own writing!
Always the hardest thing to do!!!
OK, I have a outing...I have seen the duck tracks but not the terra cotta duck!
OK, where can we find this hefty duck and its tracks?
The duck is at the old Chamber of Commerce building on Columbia St and the duck tracks on Spring Street between 1st and Western.
Thanks, David.
I'll track him and his tracks down.
Your observations always very much appreciated.
