Thank you for this article! Nice history of Denali. I think it's important for all of us to keep raising our voices in opposition to these policies. Keep up the good work!!
My list so far: Vulture = Musk; lapdog = Vance; turkey = the orange man; chicken = McConnell and a variety of news media, including WaPo and LA Times. And thanks for the inclusion of Seattle baseball history in the lede. (P.S. Did you mean Gaetz, not Goetz, in re scum?)
My sense is the people will come through on this one. I don't see anyone in Alaska accepting this. While we're on names, there are more to put right, like Tahoma, Koma Kushan, Loowit, and Klikitat, for starters.
How about renaming the president's cabinet the Dog Vomit Slime Mold Cabinet. It seems quite appropriate to me. Perhaps shortened to the DVSM Cabinet in future history books. Nothing will bring any sanity to these hooligans, so why not beat them at their own game. We could re-name the Pacific Ocean to Piss On It. Since that is what we are doing if we allow drilling of the coast.
To improve a very good piece, I would suggest reporting that Koyukon Athabascan is one of the Indigenous languages of the Alaskan Interior (not the only one). The Alaska Native Language Center has a very good map of them at https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/anlmap.png
The Seattle Times ran an article on Sunday, Jan. 30 from the Anchorage Daily News by Michelle Theriault Boots that went into the various Indigenous names for Denali. ("Denali versus McKinley: A brief history...") It quoted James Kari, who is professor emeritus at University of Alaska, Fairbanks, and also a friend of mine. But while there are various Indigenous names for the mountain, Denali seems to be the consensus name in Fairbanks.
Brian, thanks for your follow up information on the Koyukon Athabascan and that I should have noted that it was one of many languages from that region.
In the last few years "T" has been added on to LGB in much the samd way as you describe "...deplorable moves of arrogant bullies..."" In part it was done by the Human Rights Commission altering definitions so that sex and gender are the same. So I lost my rights as a woman to privacy and safety; those rights were given to men who "feel"like they are women. I am glad that male and female have been returned as undisputable science. Now if we can imbue some respect and dignity to rebalance ourselves and the geography with original identities.

Outstanding, especially lapdog! And, yes, I meant Gaetz.
Moving to pandemic, infectious diseases, "Pestilence" for Miller
Every day is another assault on women, the environment, decency, etc.
I propose an obvious substitution for Jackass - Trump, who defies the depths of human depravity and makes a stubborn mule look very cute and agreeable
That's a good one, though I try to avoid saying his name.
Those of us who call our local volcano Tahoma (NOT Rainier!) sympathize!

Only problem is that Dog Vomit Slime Mold is lovely and interesting!
True. sigh Maybe the ... They Make Me Vomit Cabinet? You know the TMMV Cabinet. :-)

Plaudits to David's recounting of history, and tribute to respect of the Denali name.
As for the animal associations: David's creative suggestions could become provocative norms.
