Fun geology writing David. I loved the careful description and images in word and photos. It informed my understanding of frost heave and rocks appearing to sink then re-surfacing.
My husband and I witnessed the ice-raising-the-soil phenomenon on a small local trail we walk outside of Redmond, about 4 miles, and at about 500 feet elevation. I had never seen something like this before, and your description fits exactly. Thank you for your writings. Janice
SUGGESTION FOR ICE FORMATION ON THE CLIFF - "Black box radiation" is what causes the dog dish to freeze the surface when the air has not reached freezing. The principle is that heat goes from the warm point (unfrozen water) to the cold point (outer space), transferring energy by point-to-point Radiation.

Yay, I really like the "Word of the week" feature since, more often than not, I learn something new!
