Street Smart Naturalist Subscriptions
Greetings all.
It’s that time of year for my semi-annual “Hey, you can be a paid subscriber” newsletter. I’ll cut to the chase; I’d be honored if you decided to support my writing and this newsletter by getting a paid subscription, if you don’t already have one.
I started this endeavor more than four years. The main idea, which still sustains my work, is to share stories about human and natural history in the Pacific Northwest. I had no idea how that would turn out and whether people would be interested. Suffice it to say, the newsletter has been far more successful and far more enjoyable to write than I could have imagined. It’s always a pleasure to research and write each one; I sincerely hope that the stories and ideas bring some pleasure to you, and perhaps, even encourage you to get outside and make your own discoveries.
In case you are interested, here are my most popular newsletters of the past six months.
• How Not to Name a Mountain - My response to the asinine idea of “renaming” Denali back to Mt. McKinley.
• Waterfront Clam Garden - A celebration of the wonderful reimagining of Seattle’s waterfront.
• Rejoicing in an Orwellian Spring - Wow, spring erupts so beautifully in Seattle.
Favorite Word of the Week - Urticate comes from the Latin ūrĕre, meaning to burn. In the PNW, we are probably most familiar with this term as the genus of nettle Urtica. This was how Latin speakers referred to nettles, a group of plants that has long given blisters to the unwary worldwide.
So if you are interested in more thrilling facts, exciting observations, cutting edge vocabulary, and sometimes silly writing, please consider becoming a paid subscriber. My mom says “It’s worth it.” And, of course, my newsletter will always offer a free subscription level.
Here are the options:
The main benefit is simple: you will continue to receive a weekly infusion of nature and history and perhaps a laugh or two. Basically, your support makes it possible for me to write these newsletters and share them with readers. Other benefits vary with the level of subscription:
Monthly ($5) or Annual ($55) - Additional newsletters throughout the year.
Founding Member ($120) - Additional newsletters, plus one free copy of one of my books. If you renew this annual plan, we can discuss a free copy of one of my other books.
Here’s the link to subscribe. When you enter your email, it will open a link showing you the options to subscribe.
(If you are already a paid subscriber, Substack will send you information about your renewal on the anniversary of when you subscribed. Isn’t that clever of them? Also, please note, their default is auto-renewal; I can deactivate this if you want me to.)
I look forward to continuing the Street Smart Naturalist newsletter and to hearing and learning from you. If you’ll keep reading — and subscribing in whatever way you can — I’ll keep writing.
Sincerely,
David
p.s. You will receive my regular newsletter on Thursday.
And, as a bonus. Two sort of funny pictures of me out in the field.
