Thanks for the film review. I'll file it alongside the terrible wolf hunting survivor film I saw a decade ago.

The video of a wolf harvesting crabs is certainly a Bella example that hews to the argument that they are intelligent and adaptable beings. You may have slipped on the homonym hues/hews but I've done the same thing on the beech, er beach...while hiking on Vancouver Island where wolves Rome.

I was awestruck watching the wolf retrieve the crab from the trap. And noted that according to YouTube only 48 people have viewed this amazing footage. Thank you for sharing. Yet another example of "ain't nature grand" and a reminder of the intelligence of wolves.

Excellent column. I share completely your views of wolves and how necessary and intelligent they are. Thanks for trying to change the wolf image.

I’m reminded of Erica Berry’s book Wolfish: Wolf, Self, and the Stories We Tell Ourselves About Fear (https://www.ericaberry.com/wolfish). A fantastic look at the way we related to wolves and why we’ve used them as scapegoats for our fear for hundreds of years.

Well, I’m not convinced Del Toro randomly inserted wolves into his film. Though they were not in Shelley’s book(now I’ll need to return to it to get a sense of her references), maybe he is intending to bring in their power as a commentary on the wolf/human connections, thinking of them more as an outward manifestation of the ‘shredding’ of innocence taking place for a new young soul.

Consider the evolution of werewolf legends as imagery reflecting the duality of our nature.

Haven’t yet watched this seeming masterpiece, but have been following the record of its development. Very eager to immerse myself.

Stephanie, I agree. I don't think it was random but not sure it is a commentary or not, but if it is, it does not seem to me to be a good one. Hope you enjoy the film.

Will get back to you.

Thnx for the reply and opinion: love considering art/politics/culture.

Well said, and thank you, David. When will we learn not to demonize other species in service of our human myths and flaws? (Rhetorical question)

Glad that was rhetorical as I really didn't want to answer it!

I don't blame you at all. ;)

That video of eating the harvested crab is amazing! Along with your essay/story, thank you.
